Fair and Square?

Pacific Lumber has given the Eureka Reporter another exclusive story in which the new PL CEO George O'Brien repeatedly calls for fair treatment.

“One reason PALCO is having troubles today is (Maxxam’s reputation),” O’Brien said. “People can find fault with any situation. But I can tell you, PALCO can be made to work. Can we solve all of the problems with all of the regulators around here? Probably not. Is there a way to build more trust? I hope so, particularly if people are willing to be fair.”

Soft-spoken, O’Brien says he’s a quick learner, a good listener, understanding, fair and not afraid to admit when he’s made a mistake. He also likes to work and is “generally known for being able to deliver on my promises.”

“People have to be fair with us,” O’Brien said. “There is fair, and there is fair.

Well which is it?

Do you mean that in a "Fair's Fair, we were here first" sort of way?

Is that like "All's fair in love and war" ?

Or do you truly intend to treat others, including opponents, with the same fairness you are demanding?

Blaming PL's problems on Maxxam's reputation and "regulators" isn't too fair to begin with.

dude. this is pissing me off. I see this pattern happening where people keep getting put in decision making positions at PL who arnt qualified - so they can "play dumb".
I dont want to let them get away with cleaning the slate after each tun of their revolving-door managment.

Exactly. Manne took over for Campbell so he could be the "axe man" and lay off hundreds of workers and shove in the new, automated mill. Manne was a disaster with his lack of public relations skills and his threats against the employee who is now suing him (and the company) over being forced to cover up toxics in order to get the mill built pronto. Now there is the new guy who can resurrect the old line that "this is the new PL," not like the old PL who ravaged Owl Creek, Stafford, Elk River and Freshwater, and funded the recall.

O'Brien sounds a lot like Donald Rumsfeld.

As for "fair" treatment...Fair has many meanings. (12 are listed in the first of 8 entries at Dictionary dot com. I think O'Brien means the first one "Of pleasing appearance, especially because of a pure or fresh quality; comely." or the similar 4th one "Free of blemishes or stains; clean and pure: one's fair name." and that they should not be portrayed any other way and that we should not obstruct them. (12th definition- "Archaic. Free of all obstacles." like the fairway on the golf course maybe)

However, in no way shape or form are they "Consistent with rules, logic, or ethics: a fair tactic." and a fair ("Having or exhibiting a disposition that is free of favoritism or bias; impartial: a fair mediator." or
"Just to all parties; equitable: a compromise that is fair to both factions.") examination of their activities for the last 150 years would show this and examination of their parent company, Maxam, would fill anyone with moral outrage.

I think they are fair game as in the 11th meaning "Lawful to hunt or attack: fair game".

The Eureka Reporter is owned by Rob Arkley and is a propaganda rag for fascism. They will publish letters however, at least as of a couple months agao, from non fascist view points and, unlike the Times Standard, do so in a timely fashion. It is the "news" where they are distributing the propaganda and not the opinion pages and I encourage people to write a letter to the editor and try to connect O'Brien's left brain language center ramblings to right brain three dimensional reality. You probably shouldn't follow my example...

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
