Barnum Timber Has New Logging Plan in the Upper Mattole

The recently submitted logging plan covers 97 acres of mixed Redwood, Douglas Fir and hardwood forests near Whitethorn. The Barnum Timber Company logging plan states that the area is "dominated" by second growth trees that range from 40 to 50 years old. They also say however that there are 18 acres in the plan containing trees up to 90 years.

In the words of the Barnum forester who wrote the plan, "The THP area is a second growth stand with a few scattered residuals in Mill Creek."

What this place actually looks like on the ground remains to be seen. Timber companies sometimes downplay the presence and significance of old growth trees in a logging plan when they think they can get away with it.
